HELEN SMITH TARCHALSKI, pianist, teacher, and author, is a graduate of Peabody Conservatory, where she studied with Fernando Laires. She holds the Master Teacher Certificate from Music Teachers National Association.
She has given presentations and performances throughout the United States, including at MTNA conferences, the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Her performances are recorded on music software sound files and have been broadcast on television programs. She is the teacher of many prize-winning students, and several have been presented in televised performances and as soloists with orchestras, including the National Chamber Orchestra.
Helen has written many articles for professional magazines and texts, including the "Survey of Piano Pedagogy" entry for Encyclopedia of Keyboard Instruments. She also served as general editor of Soundboard, and for Teaching Toward Tomorrow by Sam Holland. In addition, she is author of the critically acclaimed music education software program Symbol Simon, published by Electronic Courseware Systems.
Helen serves as president of Montgomery County Music Teachers Association, a board member of the American Liszt Society, vice-president for Anne Arundel Music Teachers Association, technology chair for Maryland State Music Teachers Association, a member of the MTNA technology symposium, and organizing committee member and chair of the Independent Teaching Committee for the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
She maintains an independent piano studio in Gaithersburg, Maryland and is the founder and director for Annapolis School of Music in Annapolis, Maryland.
